3/26/11

The 1st. Qtr. 2011 KMI/AMI Alumni Golf  was originally scheduled to play at Sunol Golf Course on 3/19 Saturday.
However, due to the heavy rain on the day, it had to be postponed by one week to 3/26, as described in the following e-mail from W. K. Chang.

Well, we did not play golf. The rain was heavy and steady and it was cold. All 7 players showed up at the pro shop on Saturday at 10am on time! We saw some crazy people (I saw 2 foursomes) playing golf at Cypress Course in the rain. However, we quickly agreed not to play golf. Instead, we drove to Castlewood CC which was not far away from Sunol GC and took coffee and ate buffet lunch at the club restaurant. Thanks to Mr. D. I. Cho and Mr. K. M. Shim who bought the lunch for all of us!

Over the lunch, Mr. D. I. Cho "announced" two:

1. He was selling his membership at Castlewood CC and his membership could be terminated soon. Practically next month, April, will be the last month of his membership.

2. He and Mrs. Cho would no longer play golf any more once their membership at Castlewood is terminated. In another word, they are retiring" from playing golf! So, they won't be playing golf every day or every week. But they "will" participate in KAMI golf tournaments every quarter!

Thanks to Mr. D. I Cho and Mr. K. M. Shim. Because of their memberships and kind invitation, we were so grateful that we had privileges to have our KAMI golf tournaments at the Castlewood without paying hefty green fees; a total of 4 tournaments in last 2 years. Once the Cho leaves Castlewood, we won't be able to enjoy the same privileges any more. So, we will have our Q1 tournament at Castlewood to commemorate Mr. and Mrs. Cho's retirement from Castlewood CC and golf.

Tournament date is next Saturday, March 26. Mr. and Mrs. Shim will be leaving to Korea next day on March 27 and we cannot have KAMI tournament without them. We will play golf next Saturday, rain or shine. Please join us at this tournament. There are so many good reasons why you should come and play:

1. This is to commemorate Mr.  & Mrs. Cho's "retirement" from playing golf.
2. This will be our last tournament at Castlewood CC.
3. This is a playoff game among 4 tournament winners (DI Cho, WK Chang, KR Choi, Mrs. TH Lee) in 2010 to decide final champion for the year of 2010.
4. This is our Q1 tournament in 2011.

Our next tournament :

When: March 26, Saturday, 12:00pm
Where: Castlewood CC, Hill Course, in Pleasanton ,
  http://www.castlewoodcc.org/
Fee: $60/player

Please come to the pro shop at Hill Course by noon.

However, heavy rain in the 3/26 morning was forecasted again gradually clearing in the afternoon. The question was what time the rain will stop on the day to play golf at 1:00 PM at latest. I watched weather system movement from 2:00 AM through Weather Channel and TV News in the morning of 3/26.

Fortunately, the rain in the morning was not as heavy as expected and cold front line moved out of Pleasanton area by noon. There was still on-and-off very light rain while we were playing front 9 but there was no rain when we play back 9. We switched course from Hill to Valley Course, as the Valley Course has more sandy soil and not as muddy as Hill Course after the rain. The course was generally OK but very wet here and there as shown picture below. In addition, there was almost no wind making play little easier. There was one advantage on the day - Because it was rainy in the morning, there was only a few teams playing in the whole course - wide open course for this crazy players only !!

There are two advantages playing at expansive private club of Castlewood Country Club. First, we don't need advanced reservation. We can just show up and tee off any time we want. In addition, because K. M. Shim and D. I. Cho are members, 4 players (Mr./Mrs. Shim and Cho) do not pay green fees making $90 green fees per player to less than half for 7 players in total, which is not any more expansive per player base.

After the round at 18th. hole green with club house behind :
(Left to right) :
D. I. Cho, T. H. Lee, Jane Cho, Mrs. Shim, K. M. Shim, K. R. Choi and W. K. Chang.

The course was generally OK considering rains almost every day for last one week including rain in the morning on the day. (Last winter was very wet winter with a lot of rainy days, more than 20 rainy days in a month for whole winter, Dec. - Mar.). However, we could see waters in the fairway here and there in a few holes. Clear days are forecasted from next week as the winter is over finally.

Out of 4 PAR-3 holes, there was only one "Closest to the Pin" winner at #14 hole - Mrs. K. M. Shim.
At all other PAR-3 holes - #4, #6 and #11, no one could send the ball to the green in one which was very rare to happen.

The "Longest Drive" winner was K. M. Shim at 13th. hole.

The Medalist was K. M. Shim hitting 88 at this wet and still rainy course. Congratulations !!

There were two tournaments going on at the same time. The 2011-1Q regular tournament and play-off for 2010 annual championship among quarterly winners in 2010, 1Q - D. I. Cho, 2Q - W.K. Chang, 3Q - K. R. Choi and 4Q - Mrs. T. H. Lee who could not join. D. I. Cho was the final winner of both tournament championships on the day hitting the lowest net score.

After the play, we have chatted about an hour at he Castlewood club house, presenting awards, and moved to the Korean Village Restaurant in Livermore. The Medalist winner, K. M. Shim bought the dinner on the day.
Many Thanks Kenny and see you about 3 months later !! Have a nice flight to Korea  tomorrow.
